From 8 October 2013 it is available for qualification of welders operating on steels a standard that is the result of the collaboration between ISO and CEN: EN ISO 9606-1: 2013.

The law was recently also adopted by UNI and, after a few months of coexistence with the 287-1, it became mandatory starting from 30 October 2015.

Among the novelties, the identification of some new processes such as 138 (metal cored), 142 (TIG without filler material), 143 (TIG with cored wire), 145 (TIG with reducing mixture), extension of the field of validity for the qualification on plates, the introduction as essential variables of the filler material and of the deposited one, the approach as regards the welding positions to the ASME standard, for which the overhead (PE) will not include more in the qualification range the ascending vertical (PF) but only the flat (PA) and the front (PC), and, above all, the modalities for the renewal of qualifications which, without prejudice to the obligation of the supervisor of company welding activities to certify the operational continuity of the staff entrusted to him every six months, offer 3 different possibilities:

1) repeat the test as it is to the original every 3 years;

2) subject every 2 years to volumetric checks 2 welds carried out in the last 6 months within the validity of the qualification;

3) for companies certified according to UNI 3834-2 and 3, every 6 months document the operational continuity of the welder in the specification in question.
